Book Closes On BHA’s Biggest Case
The final move has been made in what has been the most complex anti-corruption investigation ever undertaken by the British Horse Racing Authority.
The final players to be felled are the father and son duo of Peter and Nick Gold, the first copping five years and the second getting seven.
They are among 11 people found guilty of corruption relating to a series of races in 2009.
They were the last to be sentenced with the tribunal waiting on further written submissions.
All up among the 11 people found guilty bans total 78.5 years.
The most severe punishments were given to former owners Maurice Sines and James Crickmore.
The BHA is pleased to bring to an end this ongoing saga with the final people brought to justice.
“While it was of course recognised that the disciplinary panel had concluded the Golds were not aware of the arrangements that Mr Sines and Mr Crickmore made in a number of instances to secure jockeys’ agreement to ride to lose if necessary, they were engaged from the outset in providing Mr Sines and Mr Crickmore with their largest and most convenient route to the lay betting markets.
“They did this in the knowledge that inside information inspired the selections, even if they did not know that the information sometimes extended to include agreements by jockeys to lose if necessary.”
There is still the possibility that the Gold’s appeal the decision of course meaning the case could extend into 2012.
