Amateur Jockey Steals The Show At Cheltenham
Amateur jockey Harry Derham has won the Greatwood Handicap at Cheltenham Racecourse aboard four-year-old Brampour.
Derham, who is just 17-years-old, steered Brampour to win the race by two and a half lengths ahead of second place-getter Olofi.
The young jockey was given the ride by his uncle, Paul Nicholls, who trains Brampour.
“It’s unreal. I’m very, very lucky that Paul and the owners have let me ride this horse,” Derham said.
“I was flat-out all the way but then he picked up.
“Paul has been so good to me, even when I was young, and to do it for him is so unbelievable.”
Nicholls was impressed with his nephew’s magnificent ride.
“It’s a lot to ask of a 17-year-old, but that was some ride,” Nicholls said.
“I always said to him that he’s not going to get chances just because he’s my nephew, but he’s incredibly fit, he works hard, and he’s just one of the lads.
“I thought the horse would come on for his first run, but he’s made a massive improvement.”
Brampour is now expected to run in the Stan James Hurdle next month.
