Tattersalls Gold Cup Preview

Former Australian galloper So You Think will start the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup at Curragh on Sunday as a raging favourite.

So You Think won the Group 3 Mooresbridge Stakes last start at The Curragh by ten lengths and looks as if he will be able to transfer the form that saw him win five Group 1’s in Australia to Ireland for Aidan O’Brien.

This race was set to be the clash of the titans with last year’s English Derby and Arc winner Workforce, scheduled to run in the race. However trainer Sir Michael Stout decided he would give his star an easier start to his four year old season.

“We were patient with Workforce last year and we will be again this year,” said Stout who also confirmed that Workforce would more than likely be aimed at the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown on May 26.

The withdrawal of Workforce means that So You Think is now clearly the best horse in the race, and will start as a very short favourite. Bet365 Bet365 currently has the two-time weight for age champion of Australia as a 1/3 favourite.

In an interesting side note, Ryan Moore, who is the stable rider for Sir Michael Stout will ride So You Think on Sunday after deciding against going to Singapore on the weekend. It will be interesting to see who Moore rides when So You Think eventually meets Workforce.

The pair are set to clash in the King George Stakes at Ascot in July. Workforce has been declared an early favourite, just ahead of So You Think.

It is hard to see any of the other horses in the field get near So You Think, who won his start without being extended.

Dermot Weld will saddle up 12 time winner Famous Name, although he appreciates what a task his charge faces.

“We realise that we are taking on an exceptionally talented racehorse in So You Think but Famous Name is very well and takes his chances,” said Weld.

Campanologist is also in the field for Godolphin, however he was fourth of six at Newmarket last month and also finished well back in the 2010 Melbourne Cup, a race So You Think ran third in.

Aidan O’Brien will also saddle up Await the Dawn for the Tattersalls Gold Cup, and he is currently rated an 8/1 chance.
