Horse Racing Today 24 May 2011

Horse racing today from the UK will see race meets take place at Huntingdon, Chepstow, Ripon, Hexham and Lingfield. We take a look at the major races and the best bets of the day.

First we turn our attention to Huntingdon, which will play host to a six race jumps card.

The biggest race of the day at Huntingdon is the Class 4 Handicap Chase over 2 miles and 4 ½ furlongs. A field of just seven will be fighting it out, and it appears as if the Emma Lavelle trained R’Cam will be very hard to beat. The nine year old gelding has not raced for some 243 days, however he was able to win his last start in a race by an impressive 18 lengths.  The best bet of the day from Huntingdon comes in race five. Expect Brunston to be at short odds, but if he shows even half the ability he showed in his last start win at Uttoxeter he will be winning this easily.

Next we turn our attention to Chepstow which will play host to a six race card, with all races taking place on the flat course. The premier race of the day is the Class Five Handicap over the mile journey, which will be run as race three. Expect this to be an even betting race, with Forward Feline and Bold Cross expected to be the best backed runners. The best bet of the day at Chepstow comes in the last race of the day. The David Elseworth trained Westhaven produced a stunning turn of foot to win last time out at Lingfield, and if he can transfer his all-weather track form to the grass he should win comfortably.

Ripon will play host to an eight race card of flat racing. The feature race of the day is the Class 3 Handicap over the mile. It will be run as race four, over the mile journey. Expect the Richard Fahey trained Lord Aeryn to attract the most support. Saint Pierre, who was disappointing after a spell should be back to peak fitness and Dubai Dynamo is also given a winning hope.

Hexham will host a six race jumps card, with the main race of the day being the Class 3 Handicap Chase, which will be run as race five. Logans Run, who is trained by J Howard Johnson, is the best bet in race five, and probably the best bet of the day. Logans Run’s last six runs have produced four seconds and one win. Punters should not shy away from the fact that he has been pipped at the post in most of his recent runs as they were in a much higher grade than he faces here today. Logans Run is undefeated at the Hexham track.

Finally we turn our attention to the all-weather meeting at Lingfield, which features seven races. The main race of the day will be race 4, the Class 5 Handicap over seven furlongs. This race is expected to be wide open betting affair with Aquilifer, Ceffyl Gwell and Tamareen coming in for the most support. Lingfield bettors should be able to get their day off to a good start as there are short priced favourites in each of the first two races. In the first race, Richard Fahey enters the untried Maltease Ah. Although he is unraced there have been some big wraps on his and if he can live up to those he will handle this field. Ilissos is also expected to dominate the betting in race two. The Class 6 event represents quite a step down in class for the three year old colt.
