St. Leger Stakes Odds & Favourites – Midas Touch

The St. Leger Stakes, final leg of the English Triple Crown, is fast approaching; Doncaster will host this much-anticipated event on Saturday 11th September. This fixture also serves as the last leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown and is the final Classic race in 2010; and – unsurprisingly – things are heating up as the race draws closer. Over the past days we have been introducing you to the race favourites and today’s focus is on Aidan O’Brien-trained Midas Touch.

Three-year-old Midas Touch seems to be working up to a grand performance at the St. Leger Stakes. Race sponsor Ladbrokes is currently offering 7-1 odds on this Ballydoyle student. The colt has competed in seven professional races so far, winning twice, coming second twice and scoring third place once. Midas Touch ran to his first victory in only his second professional appearance, smashing competition with a seven lengths winning margin in the Tri Equestrian Maiden Stakes at the Curragh.

The colt’s second and (thus far) last win was recorded in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown on 9th May 2010. Both victories were achieved under the guidance of champion jockey Johnny Murtagh – who is rumoured to be taking the reins again in the St. Leger Stakes this Saturday.

After his two consecutive victories Midas Touch suffered a set-back placing only fifth in the Investec Derby at Epsom. However, not one to be discouraged, trainer Aidan O’Brien promptly sent his student back on the track in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby; which saw Midas Touch come a close second to stable mate Cape Blanco. Only a few weeks later, on 17th August 2010, Midas Touch ran to another second place in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York.

After these two promising performances it is no wonder that Midas Touch’s connections’ hopes are rising as the race draws closer. The colt has been doing outstanding work in training and is sure to run a memorable race on Saturday 11th.
