St Leger Festival 2010 – Day 4 Horse Races

Previews for St Leger Day fixtures, held on the final day of the glorious and glamorous St Leger Festival at Doncaster:

Race 1 – Champagne Stakes – 2.10pm – 7 furlong

This excellent Group 2 event is hosting a battle of two-year-old colts over a ferocious 7 furlong sprint. Interesting contenders include Richard Fahey’s Waltz Darling, who won two of her four starts this season; and rebellious but talented Toolain from the Jarvis stables, who also has recorded two wins this season, as well as unseating Frankie Dettori in his debut race. Race 2 – Ladbrokes Portland Heritage Handicap – 2.45pm – 5 furlong, 140 yards

As a Class 2 Handicap this fixture features some excellent mature runners over the age of three, who will bring the thunder in this sprint event. The spectacular line-up of talent includes runners like Harry Patch, who is yet to finish outside the money after five career starts; and Masamah, unbeaten in his last two consecutive races, including the Queensferry Stakes at Chester. Race 3 – Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes – 3.20pm – 1 mile, 6 furlong, 132 yards

At last it is time for the central event of the St Leger Festival, the St Leger Stakes. As the final leg of the English Triple Crown, the Fillies’ Triple Crown and the last of the British Classic races, the St Leger Stakes are the most anticipated event of this meeting. It features the finest three-year-olds of the season, including Snow Fairy, Rewilding and Midas Touch – and it is guaranteed to be the highlight of the St Leger Festival. Experienced runners over the age of three will be competing in this great Class 1 sprint event. The line-up features Premio Loco, who has won and placed in 12 of his 19 career starts; Aidan O’Brien’s old favourite Air Chief Marshall, winner of the Minstrel Stakes at the Curragh; and Shakespearean, trained by Saeed Bin Suroor, who recently won the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. Race 5 – Powell Engineering Nursery – 4.25pm – 1 mile

A number of promising equine athletes are due to race in this medium distance event, ensuring the pace of the racing does not decrease after the feature events. Irish runner Askaud is one thoroughbred you want to keep an eye on after an impressive two-year-old season of one win and two second places. Race 6 – Agriargo UK Tractor Challenge Handicap – 5.00pm – 1 mile

Things are sure going to get gritty in this action-packed Class 2 event, when thoroughbreds over the age of three take to the track in this one mile fixture. Lanigan-trained Wannabe King has been improving steadily over the last months and might just be in the shape to score a St Leger Festival win. Race 7 – Doncaster Premier Inn And Table Handicap – 5.35pm – 1 mile, 4 furlong

Outrageous performances can be expected in the Class 2 event, the final fixture of the St Leger Festival 2010. USA-born Yourgonnabelucky is carrying some high hopes for trainer Mark Johnston and jockey Hayley Turner; and Senate from the stables of John Gosden is gunning for his second consecutive win after his victory in the Fenwick Leicester Handicap on 24th August.
