Melbourne Cup 2010 Odds

The Melbourne Cup, the single most prestigious event of the Australian racing season, is coming up on Tuesday 2nd November 2010 and the field of starters is becoming more and more concrete. 2010 will see the 150th running of this incredible event and the preparations are already in full swing – with the weights for the individual runners being announced this week along with new updated odds.

The 256 thoroughbreds currently registered as potential contenders in the Melbourne Cup have been allocated their individual handicap weights. The two runners with the highest handicaps are Efficient and Alandi, both training with legend Robert Hickmott, who will be carrying 58 kilograms of additional weight.

Four-year-old Alandi’s connections are confident that this Irish-bred contender can take on the competition Down Under. Alandi remains unbeaten in his past three starts, including the 2009 Irish Field St. Leger and the French Qatar Prix Du Cadran, and has been doing outstanding work in training with Hickmott.

Efficient, bred and trained in New Zealand, is no stranger to the Melbourne Cup. The seven-year-old won the coveted cup in 2007 under jockey Michael Rodd and is planning to return to Flemington Racecourse for a repeat performance this year.

Efficient and Alandi are joined by spectacular contenders including Cavalryman and Mastery from the Godolphin stables where they train with Saeed Bin Suroor. Legends like Rite Of Passage – trained by Dermot Weld and winner of seven out of ten professional races – and Shocking – winner of the 2009 Melbourne Cup – are also readying themselves for the big day in November.
