As the Juddmonte International Stakes is the only Class 1 Group1 race of the first day of the York Ebor Festival, it comes as no surprise that it attracts only the best runners of the season. Favourite board leaders Rip Van Winkle and Byword both gave consistently excellent performances throughout 2009/10 – however, some of the other contenders taking to the track this afternoon should not be underestimated either.
Twice Over, from the stables of Henry Cecil, has run an outstanding season. Since September 2009, this great Bay Horse has not finished worse than third; racking up four of his eight career wins in the last 12 months alone. Twice Over’s most recent appearance, in the Coral Eclipse Stakes at Sandown in July, saw him race to a confident ½ length victory over a talented field of five. Jockey Tom Queally, who has stood by Twice Over since late 2008, will be taking the reins this afternoon, hopefully guiding his favourite mount to yet another excellent result.
Richard Hannon’s tough guy colt Dick Turpin is also coming to York with a great win to back him up. Dick Turpin, who has recorded six wins out of eleven career starts as well as three second places, most recently ran to victory in the Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly, France. Jockey Richard Hughes is confirmed to ride Dick Turpin in the Juddmonte International Stakes; the pair have successfully competed in a number of races.
