Bathwick Bear Wins Ripon Champion 2-Year-Old Trophy

Trainer David Evans is celebrating the third career win of his colt Bathwick Bear after the two-year-old gave a great performance in the Ripon Champion Two-Year-Old Stakes. Bathwick Bear fought hard over the six furlongs and narrowly emerged as the winner of this Class 1 Listed event at Ripon Racecourse.

5 2 Chilworth Lad 2 C Catlin M R Channon
6 ½ Lord Of The Stars 2 J Crowley R M Beckett
7 9 Minch Man 2 A Elliott Mrs K Burke

From the onset of the race Bathwick Bear was certainly travelling well under Richard Evans, keeping the pace with Richard Fahey-trained Mayson, ridden by Paul Hanagan. Mayson took charge of the field within the first moments of the race and remained in the lead for the better part of the six furlongs. The leading pair of Mayson and Bathwick Bear were chased by Minch Man and Lord Of The Stars, but it became apparent on the final furlong that the Champion Trophy would very much be a two-horse showdown.

Bathwick Bear’s ultimate success can be attributed to jockey Richard Evans, who managed to move his mount into the lead inside the final furlong. It was then that the battle of the wills erupted in full force. Mayson and Bathwick Bear matched one another stride for stride until the final yards of the race. It was virtually in the last seconds that Evans and Bathwick Bear peeled away from Mayson and snatched the victory by a neck.

Barry Meehan’s Black Moth came home third under jockey Kieren Fallon; the early chasers Lord Of The Stars and Minch Man came sixth and last respectively.

Bathwick Bear’s connection are overjoyed and eagerly awaiting the colt’s next appearance. Thus far Bathwick Bear is expected to run in the Totepool Two-Year-Old Trophy at Redcar Racecourse on Saturday 2nd October 2010.
