Race favourite Libranno is one of three unbeaten juveniles to start in the Richmond Stakes. Richard Hannon’s star-colt started his auspicious career with a win in the Joe Aggio 30th Birthday Maiden Stakes at Newmarket in May, and followed his win with another success in the July Stakes, also at Newmarket, on 8th July. This afternoon, Libranno will take to the track under jockey Richard Hughes for the first time in a professional race; his previous races were conducted under the guidance of Pat Cosgrave and Ryan Moore.
Richard Fahey’s Marine Commando is the second favourite and matches Libranno’s flawless track record. Marine Commando won the Median Auction Maiden Stakes at Carlisle in May and repeated his super-equine performance in June, winning the Windsor Castle Stakes at Ascot. Jockey Paul Hanagan, who held the reins in both of Marine Commando’s previous successes, will be riding his new favourite colt again this afternoon in the Richmond Stakes.
The third unbeaten contender in the Tanqueray Richmond Stakes is US-bred Satin Love, from the stables of Mark Johnson. Satin Love has only started in a single professional race so far, but he truly proved himself a champion on the occasion, winning the Scottish Racing Maiden Stakes at Hamilton by five lengths.
