14.15 John Smith’s Maghull Novices’ Chase

Tataniano and Ruby Walsh were in a world of their own, quite literally, as they jumped their way to glory in the Maghull Novices’ Chase. With thirteen lengths between the pair and runner-up Osana, ridden by Andrew McNamara, the win was epic not only through the effort of Walsh’s mount but also stunning visually. Eight lengths later, Archie Boy crossed the line under the direction of Davy Russell.

While Tataniano trainer Paul Nicholls is naturally thrilled for the win, especially after the less than impressive run the six-year-old enjoyed in Newbury during the winter. Nicholls stated that he was pleased he had decided to let Tataniano to sit out the Cheltenham Festival in order to allow him to get into shape for Aintree.

Edward O’Grady, on the other hand, who trained runner-up Osana, voiced his disappointment over his charge’s second place – although he also acknowledged that the eight-year-old did manage to hold his own on the field. Plans to run Osana at Punchestown over two miles are in the works.

Distance: 2 miles – Winning Time: 3:53.3
