New Kid On The Block –Trainer Ben Haslam Celebrates First Win
Todays racing at Newcastle saw young trainer Ben Haslam cheer on his very first winning horse. Hi Dancer, ridden by Giles Hawkins, is only the fifth race entry of Haslam’s career as an independent trainer. The seven-year-old raced to victory in the Complete Football Handicap Hurdle, making the Newcastle meeting a date Haslam will not forget in a hurry.
Hi Dancer, the 2/1 favourite in the Class 4 race, left behind ten competitors on soft to heavy going; with Nevsky Bridge coming in second and French-trained Long Distance tying in third place with Montiyra.
At 25 Ben Haslam is one of the youngest trainers working professionally and independently on the UK circuit. After working and learning an assistant trainer to his father, Patrick Haslam, for three years Haslam the Younger took over his father’s training license and training yard in February this year. Haslam is also a graduate of Darley Flying Start, an initiative founded in 2003 by Sheik Mohammed to assist and educate prospective breeders and trainers of thoroughbred horses.
Now, with the first win under his belt, it seems Haslam is truly ready to take on his new career. With 35 horses under his supervision, many of them former students of his father, we can be sure to hear more from this exciting new talent.
