Frostbitten: Haydock and Wincanton Weekend Meetings in Jeopardy
Continually frosty temperatures may put a stop to the Blue Square Gold Cup Day at Haydock Park Racecourse and the Kingwell Hurdle Day at Wincanton Racecourse on Saturday 20th of February. As temperatures continue to fall well below zero during the night, the state of the tracks at both locations is anxiously monitored. Although there has not been an official cancellation, the meetings will only take place if it warms considerably during Saturday morning.
The Blue Square Gold Cup at Haydock Park, which includes watch-worthy contenders like Hello Bud, Chief Dan George, According to Pete and Mon Mome in its feature race, the Blue Square Gold Cup Chase; is a much anticipated fixture that easily competes with the coinciding major race days at Ascot and Wincanton. Frost at Wincanton, on the other hand, would mean a no-go for the long awaited showdown between Serpentaria and Treaty Flyer in the Bathwick Tyres Kingswell Hurdle.
However, it seems that Haydock and Wincanton are the only racecourses in the freezing danger zone. The other meetings scheduled for Saturday 20th – at Ascot, Uttoxeter, Lingfield and Fairyhouse – are in no danger of cancellation.
