Big Buck’s, Diamond Harry, and Cold Weather at Ascot
Ascot’s racing card is full of races set to start off this Friday the 18th of December; however, cold weather has been predicted for the weekend, which may just put a cramp in the upcoming events.
Night temperatures are predicted to fall as low as -4C. Frost covers have already been laid in hopes of saving the meetings, though if the ground freezes, they may have to be called off. This will be particularly upsetting for those waiting to see some top National Hunt races, including the Long Walk Hurdle.
The Long Walk is a Grade 1 National Hunt race for four year olds and older. It’s run over a distance of three miles and one furlong. Despite the weather warning, 11 contenders are still signed up for the race. The odds-on favourite of which is Big Buck’s, but handler Nick Williams has been singing the praises of Diamond Harry over the past week. Of course, many took note of this horse after a massive win last month in which Diamond Harry was particularly impressive, beating out 15 other horses to claim the Fixed Brush Handicap hurdle title at Haydock. Ascot could prove to be very different though, as he is accustomed to being raced left-handed. Williams insists that this will not be a major issue.
As mentioned Big Buck’s is the favorite with many believing the race is as good as his. He is a World Hurdle winner, and familiar with Ascot. But, like Diamond Harry, he has predominately been raced left-handed. Nevertheless, trainer Paul Nicholls is confident in Big Buck’s chances in the upcoming race. It will be interesting to see which of these two horses prevail should the meeting actually go ahead.
