Randwick Guineas
Since 2006 the Randwick Guineas serves as the first leg of the Australian Triple Crown series; although the race itself was introduced to the Australian Racing calendar in 1935. The Australian Triple Crown series is completed by the Rosehill Guineas and the AJC (Australian Jockey Club) Australian Derby.
Before the Randwick Guineas took its place in the Australian Triple Crown, the Canterbury Guineas, which was discontinued after its running in 2005, served as the first leg of the cup.
In the years before the race was included into one of the most prestigious series of races in the country, the Randwick Guineas was a popular event. However, once the race was inducted as part of the glorious trio the prestige of the Randwick Guineas skyrocketed.
The Randwick Guineas are held annually at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney Australia, in mid-March. It is run over a distance of seven furlongs and 210 yards, and awards a purse of AU$550,000. The winner of the Randwick Guineas gains automatic entry into the AJC Australian Derby.
