Melbourne Cup Form Guide
The Melbourne Cup is famous for attracting the most high-profile thoroughbred horses of the season. Trainers and owners from all over the world have the ambition to enter one of their horses into the Melbourne Cup Form Guide. Naturally, the qualification process is a long and tedious one, judging the potential Melbourne Cup Runners on their past race performances, career earnings and overall horse racing experience. This process ensures that only the most talented equine athletes make it into the final field, making the Melbourne Cup an all-star event no serious racing fan can afford to miss, as well as the Victoria Derby, Crown Oaks and 2010 Cox Plate.
The canon of previous Melbourne Cup Form Guides includes some of the greatest racing legends of all time. From the outrageously gifted Makybe Diva, who won the Melbourne Cup an unprecedented three time (2003, 2004, 2005), to Phar Lap, the greatest Australian racehorse of all time... with company like this it is no surprise that aspirations are high in the racing community to own, train, enter or ride a horse listed in a Melbourne Cup Form Guide.
This section of the site will keep you in the know about the developments on the Melbourne Cup Form Guide with regular updates and some useful information on the individual horses as the race date draws closer.

21 Sep 2010: Melbourne Cup 2010 – British Contenders

The Emirates Melbourne Cup, hosted on Tuesday 2nd November, has developed into a truly international event and is celebrating its 150th run in 2010. With the race still months away, the shortlist of hopeful runners includes over 250 horses – and there are quite a few familiar names amongst the potential contenders. The days of British horse racing elitism are well and truly over it seems as some of our finest thoroughbreds are heading down under to compete in the Melbourne Cup 2010.
Rite Of Passage, trained by Irish legend Dermot Weld, is one of the UK contenders hoping to start in the 2010 Melbourne Cup. The six-year-old gelding has an impressive resume to show for his two years on the professional circuit. Rite Of Passage has won seven of his ten career starts, as well as scoring two third places. For most of the 2009/10 season Rite Of Passage remained undefeated, winning five consecutive races before his third place in the Neptune Novice’s Hurdle this March ended his winning streak. However, the Melbourne Cup hopeful bounced back with a win at Ascot and is now one of the UK’s hottest Melbourne Cup tickets. Rite Of Passage is priced at 14-1 at Bet365 and 28-1 at Betfair.
Trainer Richard Hannon is also hoping to send some of his charges to run in the Melbourne Cup 2010, including Martyr. The five-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the track after competing in 21 professional races since bursting on the scene in 2007. The gelding’s most recent victory was recorded in the Summer Handicap at Goodwood, a three lengths win that highlighted the potential Melbourne Cup runner’s potential. However, Martyr’s last start in August 2010, in the Ebor Handicap at York, saw the gelding place a disappointing tenth. Hannon and Martyr’s connections are hoping this slip-up will not ruin Martyr’s Melbourne Cup chances. Martyr is priced at 33-1 at Bet365 .
Another Irish Melbourne Cup applicant is Sans Frontieres from the stables of Jeremy Noseda. The colt may only have started in nine professional races thus far, but he has celebrated a string of three consecutive race wins in 2010, sprinting his way towards a place in the Melbourne Cup 2010. Sans Frontieres victories include the Princess’ Of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket and the Irish Field St. Leger at the Curragh in September – prestigious events that will earn the young runner important points when it comes to scoring the entrants to the Melbourne Cup. Sans Frontieres is priced at 12-1 at Bet365 and 19-1 at Betfair.
Other potential Melbourne Cup runners from the UK include Muir, The Miniver Rover, Our Aristocrat, Mr Medici, Libel Law and Dancing David – however, as the Melbourne Cup 2010 draws closer many of these promising contenders stand to disappear from the shortlist.
