Macau Derby

The Macau Derby is currently serving as the second leg of the Macau Triple Crown series, the newest addition to the world of international Triple Crown events. The series itself was only introduced in 2008; however, the current first and second leg, the Macau Guineas and the Macau Derby, were only inducted into the Macau Triple Crown in 2009. The Macau Derby replaced the Macau Cup as the second in this outstanding series of three thoroughbred racing fixtures.

Like all races of the Macau Triple Crown, the Macau Derby is run at Taipa Racecourse; it is planned as a annual fixture in May. The Macau Derby is run over the distance of 1 ½ miles and offers a purse of HK$2.6 million. The race is open to four-year-old thoroughbreds, as are the other two races of the Macau Triple Crown, the Macau Guineas and the Macau Gold Cup.

Interestingly, Australian race horses have been strong presence in the short history of the Macau Derby. In the inaugural 2009 running the first three horses across the line - Sunshine Sure Winner, Ecstatic Macau and Golden Pistols - were all Australian-bred.
