St Leger Stakes Betting

The St. Leger Stakes is one of the most bet-on races of the English thoroughbred racing season. As the final part of the Triple Crown and the Fillies' Triple Crown, the St. Leger Stakes is one of the few races on the English racing calendar that has antepost odds available almost all year long. The Classic Races are a vital part of the racing year, and are amongst the most followed fixtures held in the United Kingdom.

As the betting for the St. Leger Stakes starts as pretty much as soon as the Triple Crown of the current season comes to an end, the phenomenon of online bookmakers is especially handy for punting on this race. Ladbrokes, the race sponsor and one of the best internet bookmakers today, offer great antepost odds on the final Triple Crown fixture, much earlier than if you chose to bet with a 'land based' bookmaking outlet (meaning the actual stores kept by bookmaking franchises). Through the medium of internet bookmakers it is possible to compare and check the prices offered on the upcoming event from the privacy of your own home or on the go. This enables you to stay on top of the developments surrounding your selection at all times.

Ladbrokes, as the St. Leger Stakes' sponsor, is especially vigilant when it comes to updating the odds on starters in this prestigious race. The odds are checked constantly and are the most current you can find on the net. Whether you choose to take advantage of the early prices, which are guaranteed to be better value than those offered by the real life bookie around the corner, or decide to bide your time until the final line-up for the St. Leger Stakes has been confirmed, Ladbrokes - or another of our favourite internet bookmakers - will be a great address to start your research.

Check out Ladbrokes for your St. Leger Stakes betting - and odds on all other fixtures of the St. Leger Festival. The service is free to join and even offers an email service to keep you involved and informed at all times. If you plan to have a flutter this September, there is no better way to go about it.

Who better to place your St Leger Bets with than the official sponsor of the St Leger Festival: Ladbrokes? The odds for the 2011 St Leger Stakes aren't online yet - but we'll post them as soon as Ladbrokes makes them available! Be sure to check with Ladbrokes directly prior to placing your bet, as odds are subject to change right up to jump time!

12 Sep 2010: Arctic Cosmos Wins St. Leger Stakes

The winner of the St. Leger Stakes, Arctic Cosmos, gave his connections a reason to celebrate with his outstanding performance at Doncaster this weekend. Arctic Cosmos held his own as an outsider in an amazing field of runners, largely due to the excellent leadership and skill of jockey William Buick.

Arctic Cosmos was not considered a strong contender for the final 2010 British Classics title, neither by bookmakers nor by punters – the colt’s entry in the St. Leger Stakes was overshadowed by the buzz around the favourites Rewilding, Midas Touch and Snow Fairy. Even as the race was in progress, spectators paid little attention to Arctic Cosmos, who was held up in the mid field, seemingly unable to make a break.

The St. Leger Stakes was dominated from the off by Mark Johnston-trained Corsica, who was travelling well under jockey J. Fanning. The colt was tracked closely by Total Command under Ryan Moore and Ted Spread under Darren Holland. However, when the St. Leger Stakes hit the final two furlongs, the leading trio came under heavy attack by the remainder of the field of ten.

Buick proved himself a true champion jockey on Arctic Cosmos, leading his mount to the lead with one furlong to go and giving him the okay to let loose. The final stretch saw a brief duel between Arctic Cosmos and St. Leger co-favourite Midas Touch, which saw Arctic Cosmos pulling away and extending his lead to the winning margin of 1 ¾ lengths. Former leader Corsica was working hard to keep up with the front runners and was rewarded by a valiant third place in the final British Classic race.

Snow Fairy, another St. Leger Stakes favourite, came home fourth – a pleasing result according to trainer Ed Dunlop, as the filly is not technically a stayer. The much championed Rewilding ended up in a disappointing sixth place under jockey Frankie Dettori, leaving trainer Mahmood Al Zarooni concerned for the colt’s health.
