York Ebor Festival Nunthorpe Day

Saturday, 20th August 2011

The final day of the festival hosts the much anticipated Strensall Stakes and the Nunthorpe Stakes as its main event. The Strensall Stakes are the most recent addition to the Festival's race card, joining the glorious event in 2008. However, this Group 3 race over 1 mile and 208 yards has been in play since the 1980s and is a great test of the abilities of thoroughbred contenders aged three and older. The Nunthorpe Stakes are hailed as the fastest sprint race in the country. Run over a distance of only 5 furlong, this race has been dazzling spectators since 1922. It is open to thoroughbreds age two and older. It is one of the rare Group 1 events that allow juvenile horses to compete against more mature contenders. The most recent juvenile to be first across the line was 2007's Wunderkind 'Kingsgate Native'.
