Cambridgeshire Meeting

September 2011

The Rowley Mile - nicknamed 'The Course of Champions' - sets the scene for three days of racing perfection at Newmarket's Cambridgeshire Meeting in late September to early October. It stages three Group 1 races, which simply can't be beaten for quality, another three races for horses classified Group 3, and a number of races which may not be highest ranking on paper but are sure to make you sit up straight.

To complement the on track excitement, the Newmarket Racecourse hosts a coinciding Festival Of Food & Drink, which will keep spectators and punters well-fed and thoroughly satisfied throughout the event.

Race Days

Opening Day

The first day of the Cambridgeshire meeting breaks in the Rowley Mile for the race days to come. The most prestigious race of the day, the Somerville Tattersall Stakes, is a seven furlong sprint for two-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings. It was elevated to Group 3 status in 2000 and continues to thrill audiences with its displays of raw new talent.

Day Two

This is perhaps the most action packed day of the meeting, hosting two of the three Group 1 events, as well as a number of lower-ranking but equally thrilling horse races. Some highlights of the day are the Cheveley Park Stakes (sponsored by Electrolux) for two-year-old fillies over a distance of six furlongs; and the second Group 1 event of the day, the Middle Park Stakes, a race over the same distance reserved for colts. The third day of the Cambridgeshire Meeting also hosts the Oh So Sharp Stakes, a Group 3 race for fillies aged two, named and conducted in the honour of local legend Oh So Sharp, winner of the 1985 Fillies' Triple Crown.

Final Day

Day three picks up the pace one more time to bring the meeting to a worthy finish. Including the famous Cambridgeshire Handicap - forming the 'Autumn Doubles' with the Champion's Day Cesarewitch Handicap - a race over one mile and one furlong for thoroughbred's over the age of three, the final day delivers just like the previous days. The highlight of the last day is the Sun Chariot Stakes - named after the 1942 winner of the Fillies' Triple Crown - which is a one mile race for thoroughbred fillies and mares.
