Flat Racecourses

The most popular form of racing

Flat racing is the most popular form of racing in the United Kingdom, so it comes as no surprise that you will find some real gems amongst UK race tracks. Naturally, most of the racecourses are regularly visited by true Royalty and display some of the finest classical flat racing in the world but that isn't all. Amongst the many racecourses in Britain are some of the oldest in the world allowing you to not only enjoy a good day's racing but also immerse yourself into a phenomenon that is truly part of British culture.

Whether you chose to follow the Classics, take a flutter at the Stewards' Cup (like people have done for hundreds of years) or simply pay a visit to see the Queen at the Ascot Gold Cup orenjoy the view of the landscape at Sussex Stakes, there is a UK race track for everyone. You just need to know where to look for it.

The Sport of Kings

You will hear countless arguments as to which form of horse racing is the better based on whether or not the people that are doing the arguing are flat or jump enthusiasts. However, it simply cannot be argued against that the history of flat racing in the UK dates back far longer than National Hunt or at least that can be said of the major racecourses and the major races.

Races like the Derby, Oaks and St Leger date back to the 1700's and that makes them "Classics" in every sense of the word. Each flat track has its own special charm and we will mention a few of them and why they have become so famous.

Greater Demand than Ever

Racing is one of the oldest sports in the UK and its popularity hasn't diminished since the 1700's. In fact with the arrival of mainstream media then it can be argued that racing is more popular now than it has ever been. Flat racing is seen by many people to be fairer on the horses and jump racing has numerous detractors due to the relatively high number of horse deaths per year.

This means that the demand for more racecourses is always present. Chelmsford and Ffos Las will not be the final racecourses to be built in the UK that’s for sure. The increased speed that allows people to get to racecourses has increased attendances at flat tracks. Better rail links, motorways and airports allow people to get to courses that they simply couldn’t have got to without incurring significant difficulty fifty years ago.
