Racing and Rock'n'Roll
True, the races are quite good entertainment on their own. But if you think about it, you have to admit that there are very few events that would not be improved if you attached a concert to them. It is quite surprising what kind of bands racecourses manage to hire. In July 2009, for a random example, Status Quo played at Doncaster Racecourse, just because it's awesome. For the coming season we have picked out a couple of musical highlights taking place on race days - to inspire you to look for more and turn your day at the track into a boogie night.
7th August - Ascot Racecourse
The race occasion may be the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup, but the musical counterpart featuring at the event is equally, if not more alluring. Making the event a Family Day, Ascot Racecourse stages a free 80s Here and Now Concert, including artists like Boy George, Midge Ure, Johnny Hates Jazz and Captain Sensible.
23rd July - Hamilton Park Racecourse
Following their quite spectacular appearance at the racecourse last year, double-MOBO winners JLS will revisit Hamilton to give an encore. This concert may not be free, but it is sure to be remembered.
9th July - Newbury Racecourse
Newbury Racecourse invited you to hang out after the races for a spot of music, performed live by Simply Red. This falls under the 'Party in the Paddock 2010' scheme, hopefully a practice that will soon become tradition.
14th August - Newbury Racecourse
Following the races on Newbury's infamous Ladies' Day, the course has one more treat left for the ladies: a live concert by West Life will rock the 'party in the paddock' once more.
25th June - Newmarket Racecourse
Newmarket is a little notorious when it comes to booking big names to play after the races. On this fine night in June their musicians of choice are Spandau Ballet.
30th July - Newmarket Racecourse
It's the last night of the month and what better way to spend it than to go to the races first and the rock out to James Morrison? If you do have better suggestions, do contact us and let us know.
19th June, 17th & 31st July, 7th & 14th August - Lingfield Racecourse
On the warm summer nights Lingfield Racecourse invites you to roll over for a Racing & Music Night. The racing begins between five and six pm, the party starts in earnest after the last race. These events feature a selection of bands and musicians, which are confirmed closer to the dates.
As you can see there are plenty of tunes to be appreciated on the racecourses of the United Kingdom. Usually the individual racecourses announce these special events with plenty of notice, so you have ample time to get organised and take down the whole family or a group of friends. Keep your eyes open and don't forget: if you were born to race, you were born to rock.
