We have covered everything. The children's entertainment, the music, the fashion. There is nothing left to discuss about the racing circuit, or so it seems. However, before we let you run off to the races it is absolutely imperative that you be aware of the little, odd and wonderful things your local racecourse has to offer.
The Mascot Gold Cup - Wetherby Racecourse
The mascot race is quite possibly the most amazing event on earth. Some smaller versions may feature at family days at other courses, but the Mascot Gold Cup really is the one you don't want to miss. It features mascots from sports clubs, hotels, charities and any other club or corporation that can warrant having a mascot. It is a race of milk-bottles, tigers, pot plants, toasters and cute fluffy fantasy creatures; which looks completely bizarre but will most likely make your day.
A lot of racecourses across the United Kingdom invite special guests to their bigger event days, especially the meetings aimed at families. The special guests can include Olympic athletes from the equine sector, famous retired and active jockeys, and even the occasional retired racehorse. You can meet, chat and take some pictures - it will be interesting in any case.
Man Versus Horse Marathon
Although this does not take place at a racecourse as such, it is still an equine event and therefore relevant. It is also brilliant. This annual race is in its 30th year by now and is run over a distance of 22 miles in Llanwrtyd Wells, Wales, every June. The event has been won by 'man' only twice since its inauguration in 1980; which does nothing to diminish the singular appeal of this odd-yet-genius racing event. We urge you to check it out. Please.
