Kids On Course
There used to be a time when a family couldn't attend an event that would truly satisfy every member. Kids or grown-ups, one party usually had to bite the bullet of beastly boredom in order to satisfy party number two. Times have changed. Thank Heavens. Racecourses all through the United Kingdom are now offering family friendly entertainment, to soothe all parties involved and shout everyone a great time. As Dr. Seuss famously says: "A person's a person, no matter how small." And the people need to be entertained.
Easter Family Fun Day at Haydock Park
Easter Saturday sees Haydock Racecourse transformed into the perfect family day-trip destination. Children aged up to 17 enter for free when accompanied by a paying adult, and they will have more free entertainment to check out than they have time for. While Mum and Dad kick back watching the races, the youngsters can burn off some energy in a bouncy castle, gorge themselves on chocolate in an Easter Egg hunt, get their faces painted, marvel at balloon modelling and much more.
Family Race Days at Fontwell Park
Fontwell Park Racecourse in West Sussex offers three family days a year, featuring appearances from the current stars of children's television. These special event days also include fun fair rides, the ever popular bouncy castle, face painters and mascot races. A mascot race is not unlike a horserace, as long as one substitutes the horses with the mascots of regional and national sports teams. The kids are guaranteed to find this bizarre spectacle hilarious, and the same should go for most parents.
Family Fun Days at Goodwood Racecourse
Goodwood is a racecourse generally known for doing everything a little bigger and more elaborate. Consequently a visit to a family fun day at this glorious venue - held twice a year - is a little like a trip to Disneyland. There are fairground rides and the obligatory bouncy castle, but also a cast of magicians, children's entertainers, people leading the young in dance-a-longs and some free giveaways. Goodwood also has a créche and playground, and offers a membership in the GG Club to children aged 5-12.
Smaller family days - involving clowns, entertainers and, naturally, bouncy castles -are held regularly at venues like Pontefract, Doncaster, Redcar, Wetherby, Ripon and Beverly.
